My Approach:

My counseling approach is integrative. I address all aspects of my clients (mind, body, and spirit) as these areas need to be in harmony in order to be healthy physically and mentally. I am strength-based and believe that every client has the ability to lead a rich and fulfilling life. During sessions, I am actively engaged and I work with my clients to help them learn how to think in more flexible and positive ways so that they can live their lives with purpose, joy, and fulfillment.

I use an evidence-based treatment approach called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in my practice to help my clients lead lives they want to live. ACT has been clinically proven to be successful for a wide range of psychological issues.  The key aspects of ACT are to learn how to accept the things that are outside of your control and to commit to changing the aspects of your life that are within your control.

Your counseling sessions will be active and will not only consist of traditional “talk therapy.”  During your sessions, you will be learning and practicing new skills to improve the quality of your life.  With ACT, there are two basic goals. The first being to help you clarify what you really want in life; what is important and meaningful to you.  As you clarify your values, we will use them as a guide to set goals and take action to help improve your life.

The second being to teach you skills that will allow you to better handle painful thoughts and feeling so that they don’t have as much impact or influence in your life.  You will learn Mindfulness techniques (a form of mental awareness, openness, and focus.)   Learning Mindfulness skills with help you to reduce the severity and impact of unpleasant thoughts and emotions. Outside of sessions, you will be asked to practice the skills you learn during your sessions to help maximize their effectiveness.

Your counseling sessions at times may be challenging. It is difficult working through the issues that are causing you pain.  However, you and I will be working collaboratively and we will be on the same team.  I will be there to help you and guide you. We will go at your pace and you will never be forced to do anything that you are not ready or willing to do.
