Discovering the Self-Care Rituals That Replenish You

Self-care has become a buzzword—so much so that many people roll their eyes at the term. It often brings to mind images of lavish spa days, indulgent treats, and extravagant 'me-time' that can feel out of reach, unnecessary, or even selfish. But in reality, self-care isn’t about indulgence; it’s about balance.

In my practice, there has been a significant increase in stress since the pandemic (which is not surprising.) However, I am seeing an even higher significant increase in clients who are experiencing anxiety and depression related to current political and world events, as well as the overwhelming influx of disturbing news events that often lead to 'doom scrolling.' Having ways to decompress and relax are more important now than ever.

Research consistently shows that intentional relaxation and detachment from daily stressors improve both physical and mental health. Chronic stress has been linked to numerous health issues, including cardiovascular disease, weakened immune function, and mental health disorders like anxiety and depression (American Psychological Association, 2023). Engaging in activities that promote relaxation can lower cortisol levels, reduce inflammation, and enhance overall well-being (Grossman et al., 2004). So as you can see, self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for maintaining a healthy, balanced life.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to self-care. What relaxes one person may not work for another, and that’s okay. The key is to explore activities that help you recharge. Some ideas include taking a walk in nature, enjoying a warm bath, listening to calming music, practicing meditation or deep breathing, reading a book, engaging in creative hobbies like painting or writing, doing puzzles, or sipping a comforting cup of coffee or tea.

Personally, I’ve found relaxation in watching those Café Jazz channels on YouTube. The soothing ambiance of a cozy café paired with soft jazz creates a peaceful escape from the stresses of daily life for me. Apparently, I am not alone as these channels have thousands of followers!

A common struggle I hear from clients is, “I don’t even know what I enjoy anymore.” As we get older and become enmeshed in the responsibilities of work, family, and finances, we often lose touch with hobbies and activities that once brought us joy. Research suggests that as people age, they can experience a loss of personal identity due to role transitions and life responsibilities (Kroger, 2017). That’s why it’s important to experiment with different activities—whether it’s trying a new hobby, revisiting an old passion, or simply making time to explore what sparks joy.

I recently had an idea of ways to help others find their own moments of relaxation. I created Jazz N’ Coffee Puzzles, an online store inspired by activities that I have noticed help me with relaxation and based on a hobby many of my clients have said helps them to relax and escape-solving jigsaw puzzles.

Studies show that doing puzzles can improve cognitive function, reduce stress, and enhance problem-solving skills (McGregor & Foster, 2021). Pair that with the benefits of coffee—such as improved focus, antioxidants, and even mood enhancement (Smith et al., 2020)—and you have a perfect self-care ritual. In my store, I have designed several coffee-themed puzzles that offer a soothing way to unplug, unwind, and focus the mind. I also have different coffees available for purchase in my store. If you're interested, check it out: Jazz N’ Coffee Puzzles.

On another positive note, in addition to puzzles, I’m in the process of recording various guided meditations to help support my clients in their journey toward relaxation and mindfulness. I’ll soon be providing a link to my meditation channel, where you can access guided meditations designed to help you reconnect with yourself and cultivate a sense of peace.

Finding joy and relaxation is an ongoing process. Our interests shift as we grow, and what works today might not be as relaxing tomorrow or next week. So start getting in touch with your inner child and explore different ways to unwind and reconnect with yourself. If you're not sure where to start, I’m here to help. All  you have to do is reach out.

Wishing you success in discovering what brings you balance, peace, and joy.

Warmly,

Jennifer
